socialist Mickaël Delafosse defeats the outgoing mayor

In the second round of the municipal elections in Montpellier, the socialist Mickaël Delafosse, supported by environmentalists and rebellious France, overtook the outgoing mayor DVG Philippe Saurel and Mohed Altrad, the president of the rugby club of Montpellier, obtaining 48.9% of the votes in the triangular.

During the first round of municipal elections on March 15, 2020, the outgoing mayor Philippe Saurel (various left) was at the head of the votes with 19.11%, just ahead of the PS-PCF list carried by Michaël Delafosse who had received 16.66% of the votes. The president of the city rugby club Mohed Altrad also qualified for the second round with 13.30% of the vote.

In Montpellier, the political landscape for these municipal elections was atypical to say the least. The outgoing mayor had been slow to formalize his candidacy, the Greens were fighting over three lists and were ousted in the first round. A billionaire and a youtubeur king of the hoax were also candidates. The city of Montpellier had 14 lists, compared to 9 in the 2014 elections.

Montpellier is the prefecture of the department of Hérault. The city has some 285,120 Montpellier residents and its urban agglomeration has 607,896 inhabitants.
