How much nudity is allowed on Instagram is ultimately decided by the tech company. But the criteria are far from clear – and some types of nudity are censored more often than others.
If you upload pictures of naked people on Instagram or Facebook, you have to expect that they will be deleted. Because nudity is not always nudity for the big tech companies. It is often unclear which photos are deleted and which are not. In the community guidelines of Instagram you can read that the representation of nudity is generally not allowed to protect consumers. But there are exceptions. We made an attempt to find out what can be posted and how quickly the platform reacts to violations. For this we have posted various pictures on a private Instagram account.
Female nipples? Basically sexually
One shows three grown men, photographed from behind. They run naked into a lake and can be seen from head to toe. You don’t see any genitals. The picture was not taken from the platform – in contrast to a photo of a woman’s bare bottom. Although part of her back and thighs as well as her arms and hands can still be seen, the picture is apparently a close-up. What a close-up is is not explained. In addition to bare buttocks, recordings of sexual acts, naked children and the genitals are clearly prohibited.
