Britain Cracks Down on Social Media Smuggling with New prison Sentences
LONDON – The UK government is introducing a new measure that could see people smugglers face up to five years in prison for using social media to advertise their illegal services. This move comes as Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labor government faces intense pressure to curb the rising number of migrants arriving in Britain via small boats from France. This year alone, over 25,000 individuals have made this perilous journey.
An analysis by the interior Ministry revealed that approximately 80% of migrants arriving on small boats utilized social media platforms to connect with or find people smugglers during their transit.
The proposed legislation, which is currently progressing through Parliament, will introduce a new offense targeting individuals who post online advertisements for services that facilitate breaches of immigration laws. Offenders will be liable for fines and imprisonment. While facilitating illegal immigration is already an offense, the government states this new provision will provide law enforcement with an additional tool to disrupt criminal networks profiting from these crossings.
This initiative follows the government’s launch of a new sanctions regime in July, which empowers authorities to freeze assets, impose travel bans, and block access to the UK’s financial system for individuals and entities involved in facilitating irregular migration.
