“Soccer Match Abandoned After Referee Gets Beer Thrown on Him by Angry Fan”

by Ethan Caldwell

A soccer match in Germany’s third division has been abandoned after an angry fan poured beer or beer on the referee after halftime.

Relegation-threatened Zwickau’s match against visitor Rot-Weiss Essen didn’t continue in the second half because referee Nikolaus Venter was tipped a cup of beer in the face by a fan, who seemed unhappy with his decision to send off a Zwickau player and award a penalty to Essen just before half-time. .

Venter red-carded Zwickau defender Nils Boutsen for bringing down American striker Isiah Young, then awarded Essen a penalty after handballing the resulting free kick.

Simon Engelmann scored the penalty to end the first half tied at 1-1, when the team’s fans expressed their frustration.

The observers waited before leaving the stadium. Magenta Sport TV showed a fan throwing beer at the referee.
