Soccer – Freiburg im Breisgau – “Long season”: Streich explains late training start – sport

Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – Trainer Christian Streich has explained the comparatively late start of training for SC Freiburg with the closely timed next season. “It will be a long season, there will be little regeneration time in winter, so we thought it was right to give the players a decent break,” said the 55-year-old on Monday during the first team training session for the Breisgauers. Some of the other Bundesliga soccer teams started much earlier.

The coaching team took to the field with 28 field players and three goalkeepers, including four players from their own offspring, who are initially part of the professional squad on a trial basis. Newcomers Ermedin Demirovic (special leave after the late season with FC St. Gallen) and Janik Haberer (rehab after ankle injury) were missing. The sporting leadership is still counting on transfers.

“There will still be one or the other change, the squad size will be similar to last year,” said sports director Jochen Saier. Should one of the top performers such as Robin Koch or Luca Waldschmidt leave the club, he must be able to be replaced one-to-one: “For us, it is also about having the group with which we are going into the season as soon as possible” .

Streich would also like to have clarity about the squad as soon as possible. However, he did not get a dream player. “We had a player that we really wanted, who would have done us brutally good, but that couldn’t be financially supported and then it wouldn’t be done,” said Streich.
