Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lby) – Referee Martin Petersen has been removed as a video assistant by the German Football Association a few hours before the Bundesliga match between Werder Bremen and SC Freiburg. As a replacement, Marco Fritz was ordered to the Cologne video cellar at short notice on Saturday. The “Bild” newspaper first reported about the change.

Petersen had made a serious mistake on Friday evening as a video assistant in Holstein Kiel’s second division game against the Würzburger Kickers (1-0). The 35-year-old had not revised a wrong penalty decision by referee Thorben Siewer and thus favored Kiel’s winning goal.

The DFB admitted the mistake on Friday evening via Twitter. The referee’s perception that there had been a foul play by the Würzburg goalkeeper was not correct. Those responsible for the bottom of the table had expressed severe criticism after the game. “If that’s a penalty, it’s no longer my time. Then we can play table tennis,” said Kickers coach Bernhard Trares.
