Frankfurt (dpa) – The DFB chief physician Tim Meyer has called for continued high discipline from all those involved in view of the possible effects of the more contagious British virus mutation on football. However, the chairman of the Medical Commission of the German Football Association (DFB) and head of the “Task Force Sports Medicine / Special Games” of the German Football League (DFL) does not consider a fundamental adjustment of the hygiene concept to be necessary.

“New aspects and questions in connection with Corona continue to arise on a regular basis – sport is no different from the rest of society. And that is to be expected with a new virus and even more so in a pandemic,” said Meyer in a Tuesday published press release of the DFL.

“A high level of discipline on the part of everyone involved” is therefore essential. The medical-hygienic concept “continues to be the basis for gaming operations. The” Sports Medicine / Special Gaming Operations “working group is constantly following” current developments, for example with regard to mutations. This also serves to react if necessary – especially in the event of identifiable trends. It is important to analyze precisely here, as individual cases often have special features and do not automatically require an adaptation of tried and tested concepts, “says Meyer.

The day before, the DFB Cup game between Jahn Regensburg and Werder Bremen scheduled for (today) Tuesday was canceled due to eight positive corona cases among the Regensburgers. According to the Regensburg Health Department, the more contagious British virus mutation was detected in at least four of the infected. DFL Director Ansgar Schwenken said: “The decisions of the local authorities are to be accepted – we have emphasized that at all times.” Those responsible are “convinced that with consistent implementation and appropriate presentation of all the measures of the concept, it is generally not necessary to impose general quarantines on the team.”
