Socavón swallows almost complete vehicle in Queens – Telemundo New York (47)

The New York City Department of Design and Construction is investigating whether the tunneling underway created a sinkhole that eventually engulfed a nearly complete car in Queens.

The vehicle was parked on 70th Street in Maspeth early Thursday morning when the street opened. The city’s worker brigades managed to remove the car hours later.

In addition, a nearby residence lost electricity service for a few minutes.

A NYC DDC spokesperson said the department is tunneling to build a sewer line 60 feet underground in that area.

Construction of the 3,000-foot-long sewer line began nearly three months ago.

Construction was halted on Thursday due to the Thanksgiving holiday, however the DDC is investigating whether construction caused the sinking.
