Snowden can stay in Russia. The country gave him an unlimited residence permit

Snowden’s residence permit in Russia originally expired at the end of April. Due to the covid-19 pandemic, it was automatically extended until June, when Snowden requested its renewal. This was announced by the TASS agency with reference to Snowden’s lawyer Anatoly Kucheren.

Edward Snowden is a former associate of the US National Security Agency (NSA). In 2013, he released classified intelligence, which, among other things, showed that intelligence was collecting telephone records about millions of Americans.

A long-time collaborator with the US National Security Agency (NSA) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) seven years ago, he published a wealth of classified information that revealed a significant amount of US electronic and telephone espionage. According to WikiLeaks, European statesmen, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, were also targeted by the NSA.

In September, the U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that the US Secret Service’s mass-gathering program of telephone calls from Americans, which had been brought to light by Edward Snowden seven years ago, was not in accordance with the law. He also concluded that the heads of the US secret services lied to the public when they defended the program in front of it, Reuters reported.

In August, US President Donald Trump admitted that he was considering a pardon for Snowden. He said in an interview with the New York Post that “a lot of people think” that the United States is not “fair” to Snowden.

US Secretary of Justice William Barr clearly opposes the possible pardon of Snowden. He said in an August interview with the AP agency that Snowden was a traitor who threatened American security.

For disclosing this information, Snowden is accused of espionage and theft in the USA, for which he faces over 20 years in prison. Since 2013, he has been hiding from the US judiciary in Russia, which granted him asylum after his escape from the United States.
