4. Communication protocol
The communication protocols in the MDRS and Shirase simulations are similar. Each crew must carry a radio communication device with them wherever they move. The goal is to record crew activities that will be reported by the crew acting as journalists to the control station on earth.
In the MDRS simulation, the communication protocol is divided into three, namely communication between crews in the hub, communication between crews in different buildings, and communication between crews on missions outside (EVA).
There are two languages used in the EVA mission, namely sign language and radio communication language. Sign language can be used when one crew is on the ground and the other crew is on the rover. The space armor they wore was very heavy and it was impossible to move freely.
This is where the sign language function is needed, such as when giving a signal to the crew controlling the rover so that the rover can still move in a safe lane.
5. Technical space and time
The duration of the rotation of the Planet Mars is almost the same as the rotation of the Planet Earth. However, the term used to calculate time on Mars is not days, but sols (the duration of a day on Mars is slightly longer than on Planet Earth, equivalent to 1,027 days on Planet Earth). The crew can also feel the changes in the time of day and night as well as changes in temperature.
While in the Shirase simulation, they are trained not to have an orientation to the space and time of the earth. Considering this is a simulation in a spaceship, the time used is not 24 hours when the earth rotates, but a clock that continues to rotate with three parts or shifts. One shift consists of 24 hours and the crew gets eight hours of rest time.
SIM is the term used to train the crew to mark the time of about 24 hours according to the habits of humans on earth. SIM does not depend on the rotation of the sun as a marker of day and night, because there is no term night (dark) or day (light) in the spacecraft.
