Slovak football player Marek Hamšík announced on Thursday that he will end his active career after the current season. The long-time captain of the national team and record holder in the number of national team matches and goals announced this on his official website.

Hamšík ended his professional career after nineteen years. He worked in Slovan Bratislava, Brescia, Naples, Dalian, Gothenburg and currently plays for Turkish Trabzonspor. With him, he won the first domestic title since 1984 last year. He led the national team as captain at the only World Cup in 2010 in South Africa, where the Slovaks sensationally advanced to the round of 16. He netted 26 goals and played 136 matches for the national team.

Football was my love, passion and work, to which I always gave everything. I thank all the clubs in which I worked and to which I always tried to give my best.” stated Hamšík, who also served as captain in Naples, where he broke the legendary Diego Maradona’s club record for the number of goals. The Slovak scored a total of 121, later surpassed by Lorenzo Insigne (122) and Dries Mertens (148). Hamšík is still the record holder in the number of duels played for SSC (520). With the club, he also won two Italian Cups and one Super Cup, with Trabzonspor he also won the Super Cup last year.

“Special thanks to my family and closest friends who were a part of it, always stood by me and supported me. And of course, a big thank you goes to my fans who encouraged and loved me,” added Hamšík.
