Slipped on the last day of play: Nuremberg is close to the worst-case scenario

Karlsruher SC pushes 1. FC Nürnberg to the edge of the abyss in a remote duel: the relegated relegation team is threatened with a direct crash into third class. Wehen Wiesbaden a gate festival is not enough for a sensation, Dynamo Dresden honors farewell.

Holstein Kiel – 1. FC Nuremberg 1-1 (0-1)

1. FC Nürnberg converts to the 3rd league on the abyss. The nine-time German soccer champion was the big loser in the relegation battle on the last day of the 2nd Bundesliga despite a 1-1 draw at Holstein Kiel. The Bundesliga relegation dropped back to 16th place because Karlsruher SC won 2-1 (1-1) at SpVgg Greuther Fürth of all places. With 37 points each, Karlsruhe conquered the saving 15th place due to the slightly better goal difference.

The coach Jens Keller, who was already counted before the missed rescue in Kiel, now has to play two all-or-nothing games in the relegation with his team. Opponents from the 3rd league would currently be FC Ingolstadt. At the beginning everything went well for the club. Patrick Erras headed for a free kick from Johannes Geis in the 3rd minute. The Franconian arch rival Fürth was already ahead of the KSC. Geis almost increased to 2: 0 in the 45th minute, but the midfielder’s free kick slapped the post. Kiel was overall game-determining and equalized with a header by Lion Lauberbach in the 67th minute. The club had to win now because the Karlsruhe team had turned the game around in Fürth. The Kiel team came closer to winning two posts in injury time. The Nuremberg professionals sank to the ground disappointed after the final whistle – the tremors before the 3rd league continue.

SpVgg Greuther Fürth – Karlsruher SC 1: 2 (1: 1)

Karlsruher SC managed to stay in the league directly on the last matchday. The Baden team won 2-1 (1-1) at SpVgg Greuther Fürth and benefited from the simultaneous mistake of 1. FC Nürnberg near Holstein Kiel (1-1). The KSC improved in the table from 16th to 15th place and instead sent the Nuremberg team to the relegation. Fürth ends the season in ninth place. The Karlsruhe team got off to a bad start and was lagging behind after just over a minute thanks to Daniel Keita-Ruel, who headed straight in from five meters. The equalization by Dominik Kother’s dusting in the 21st minute after Philipp Hofmann’s marginal physical effort fell surprisingly. Shortly before the break, the KSC could even have taken the lead.

In the second half, Keita-Ruel initially missed the Fürth leadership (49th) and then cleared on his own line against Christoph Kobald (57th). Then KSC striker Hofmann struck again. A controversial penalty after Sebastian Ernst fouled Marvin Wanitzek on the edge of the box in the 61st minute turned him into his 17th goal of the season – and to the Karlsruhe rescue.

SV Wehen Wiesbaden – FC St. Pauli 5: 3 (3: 2)

SV Wehen Wiesbaden says goodbye to the 2nd Bundesliga just one year after their promotion. The team of coach Rüdiger Rehm won 5: 3 (3: 2) in the season finale against FC St. Pauli, but still descends into the 3rd division. Stefan Aigner (11th / 38th) and Phillip Tietz (12th / 61st, penalty kick / 66th) scored the goals of the hosts. Leo Östigard (25th) and Henk Veerman (32th) equalized in the meantime in an entertaining game for Hamburg, Veermans (73.) second goal was meaningless.

The early successful hosts, who had only moved up to the lower house in 2019 for the second time in their club history, initially acted dominantly. After the equalization, Wiesbaden remained dangerous, also because the vulnerable Hamburg defensively repeatedly revealed weaknesses.

Dynamo Dresden 2-2 VfL Osnabrück (1-0)

Dynamo Dresden has relegated. Despite a two-goal lead against VfL Osnabrück, Markus Kauczinski’s team did not go beyond a 2: 2 (1: 0) and must finish last in the table in the 3rd division. Even before the 34th and last matchday, Dynamo had only minimal theoretical chances to stay in the league. For Dresden, which had to go through a mammoth program due to a team quarantine after restarting the league and played the ninth game in 29 days against Osnabrück, it is the third relegation relegation in club history. Marco Terrazzino (23rd) put the Saxons in the lead. Patrick Schmidt (59.) raised for the hosts, who fought bitterly until the last minute. Anas Ouahim (76.) scored the connection goal, moments later Niklas Schmidt (81.) equalized.

Dresden came into the game well and powerfully from the start. After two options from Godsway Donyoh (12th) and Schmidt (17th), the opening goal from Terrazzino was well deserved. As a result, Osnabrück limited itself to the bare necessities until the half-time whistle. After the break, Osnabrück got better without first emitting great danger. Schmidt initially made it better for Dynamo and cleared the ball into the goal. The good performance of the Dresdeners was nullified by the quick double strike in the final phase.

Hannover 96 – VfL Bochum 2: 0 (1: 0)

Hannover 96 overtook VfL Bochum at the end of the season and ended the season in sixth place. The first division relegation from Lower Saxony defeated VfL 2-0 thanks to another strong Marvin Ducksch (1-0). Hanover now has 48 points, two more than Bochum. For the Revierklub it was the first defeat after eleven games in which VfL had remained unbeaten. Ducksch shot Hanover with a remarkable free kick in the 45th minute in the lead and put his second goal shortly before the end (84th).

The hosts made a supposed dream start: John Guidetti scored in the third minute after a free kick, but the goal was withdrawn because of an offside position. Even after that, 96 initially acted superiorly, until Bochum came into play better and better in the middle of the first round. However, Jordi Osei-Tutu (36.) and Thomas Eisfeld (37.) missed the guest tour. Shortly before the break, Ducksch met for it. In the second half, VfL increased the pressure and pushed for the equalization. 96 goalkeeper Martin Hansen or the post in an ice field shot (70th) prevented the 1-1. Ducksch then made everything clear.

SSV Jahn Regensburg – Erzgebirge Aue 1: 2 (1: 1)

Erzgebirge Aue presented itself with good morale at the end of the season. The Saxons won 2: 1 (1: 1) at SSV Jahn Regensburg after a deficit. Charalambos Makridis ensured the leadership of the Upper Palatinate with his first second division goal. Pascal Testroet celebrated the equalization before the break (45. + 3). And in the final phase of the second half, Philipp Zulechner (87th) struck.

After a brisk first half, in which the Jahn worked out a chance increase, the game lost some level after the change of sides. Aue had more of the game after the break and rewarded himself after a tough fight thanks to Zulechner. Regensburg did not benefit from the perfect start. After a cross from Sebastian Stolze, Andreas Albers’ header landed on the post, Makridis dusted off in the ninth game for Jahn’s first goal. Aue struck back all the later. In stoppage time of the first half, Testroet headed a free kick from the very active Philipp Riese. The goalkeepers were repeatedly in the spotlight. But Regensburg’s Alexander Weidinger and Aues Robert Jendrusch stood out several times. The 1: 2 could not prevent Weidinger.

At the top of the table, both 1. FC Heidenheim and Hamburger SV still had chances for 3rd place, which entitles them to the Bundesliga relegation against SV Werder Bremen. Heidenheim lost to second division champions Arminia Bielefeld with 0: 3, one point would have been enough for HSV. But the Hanseatic embarrassed themselves against SV Sandhausen and will play second-class after the 1: 5 in the coming season.
