Sky Announces 900 Job Cuts as It Adapts to Streaming Competition
London – Sky is putting 900 roles at risk as part of a major restructuring aimed at competing with US streaming services, the company announced today. The cuts will impact staff across the UK and Ireland, primarily in customer service and technology roles, as Sky accelerates its shift towards digital communications.
The move comes as Sky navigates a rapidly evolving media landscape, increasingly dominated by streaming giants and a consumer preference for online content. According to the company, the restructuring is designed to make Sky “future-ready” by prioritizing digital channels over traditional phone-based customer support. This announcement follows previous job cuts at Sky, including approximately 800 positions eliminated in January 2024 as customers increasingly opt for “plug-and-go” internet-based products rather than traditional pay-TV installations.
Last year, Sky also entered into a significant deal with Warner Bros Discovery, resulting in the loss of exclusive broadcasting rights for certain programs. This agreement will see Warner Bros Discovery’s HBO Max streaming service become available through Sky platforms.
The company stated the changes are necessary to ensure long-term growth and competitiveness in a challenging market. Affected employees will be offered support, including redeployment opportunities where possible.
