While Sister Audi’s e-models are on an independent platform, Skoda uses the group’s electrical kit. Advantage: The battery can be offered in three sizes – the two larger ones come to Switzerland with a capacity of 62 or 82 kilowatt hours (kWh). Rear-wheel drive with 180 or 204 hp and four-wheel drive with one engine each at the front and rear and 265 or 306 hp (RS sports version) are planned. The 204 hp version with the large battery will offer the greatest range. Up to 500 km after a new and everyday WLTP measurement cycle should be possible. Charging with 2.3 kilowatts (kW) at the socket takes forever; with 11 kilowatt wallbox it takes six to eight hours. A direct-current fast charger with 125 kW fills the capacity from 10 to 80 percent capacity within 40 minutes.
Most customers have long bought Skoda because of the design, says Maier. And what does the Enyaq look like? No idea – the prototypes for the first test round around Dublin (Ireland) are wrapped in camouflage film. What you suspect: the typical Skoda front even with a radiator grille, although it doesn’t need it technically, and the hip swing over the rear wheel – just like VW’s ID.4, which is expected to come on the same platform at the end of the year. With a length of 4.64 meters, the Enyaq fits exactly between the Skoda SUVs Karoq and Kodiaq, offers five spaces, 585 liters of loading volume and up to 1200 kg of trailer load. Some Stromer are not even prepared for a trailer hitch.

Like a normal car
Nothing can be seen inside either; the interior is covered with black rags. “But everything will look and feel like a normal car,” says infotainment developer Michael Maruska. It should be cozy and be operated as usual, otherwise typical Skoda customers could hardly be convinced by the Stromer. You sit over the battery, but deep enough to feel the car. There will be five predefined configurations including recycling materials, plus ten packages with options. Because the materials and the Enyak production CO2nd cause, Skoda compensates with CO2ndCertificates.

The 204-hp version with rear-wheel drive goes on the test lap. It sprints with a whisper – typically electric car – right from the start with full torque. Completely new driving experience for a Skoda – otherwise they are usually front-wheel drive: an Enyaq weighs at least 1.85 tons, but there is little to be felt even in the corners because the rear-wheel drive pushes the car through it cleanly. Three trolleys with different degrees of hardness will be available, of which the middle one fits best. «We are only 70 percent complete; there is still a lot of fine tuning, »says project manager Jan Pavlicek.

Where to with the charging cable?
Details bring more range: The rear drum brakes – “completely sufficient, because most of the time the electric motors brake electrically,” says Pavlicek – bring ten kilometers more thanks to the weight saving, the aerodynamic rims with cover another ten. Cameras instead of outside mirrors? Pavlicek shakes his head. Too expensive for Skoda’s pricing philosophy. The Enyaq also has Skoda-typical features such as umbrellas in the front doors. But there is still one brilliant idea missing for the charging cable: it can be stowed under the loading floor in the trunk – and must be unloaded like with other electric vehicles if you have to go to the pillar.

The Enyaq prices are not yet known. Because of the corona crisis, the disclosure has to be postponed from summer to October. The market launch of the Enyaq is not at the end of the year, but only at the beginning of 2021. It starts with a start edition with 1895 copies – because Skoda was founded in 1895, 125 years ago.
