Although Škoda – more precisely AZNP – once produced an iconic van marked 1203, today it has no such car on offer. This is despite the connection with the Volkswagen Group, whose supplies are very popular among entrepreneurs and the general public.

However, the current Škoda designer Daniel Hájek thinks that this could change – as part of the “Icons in a New Coat” project, he modernized the Škoda 1203 in his own way. “Such a car would look very good to the Škoda brand today,” he says.

He is proposing the Volkswagen Transporter as the technical basis. Or perhaps more precisely, Volkswagen California. In his imagination, the new 1203 is a camping car with a tilting roof.

When designing, he wanted to achieve timelessness and clear inspiration in the “twelve-third”, but so that it was not primarily “retro”. “I designed a modern car with reference to a legend,” he describes the philosophy of the study.

The result is a “double peak”, ie extending the roof over the windshield and the rim of the radiator grille. However, the features are sharper both compared to the original Škoda and the current transporter.

The stern was the most demanding. “The original 1203 is relatively narrow, modern cars are very crouched,” he outlines the problem. In addition, it was necessary to get a link to the rear lamps, which 1203 received from the model 1000 MB.
