Ski flying coming today? For the first time in 2023, ski flying from the large hill at the Kulm will again be on the TV program at the Ski Jumping World Cup today (January 29, 2023). The schedule includes the competition from Bad Mitterndorf in Austria live on TV and live stream on Sunday. Yesterday on Saturday the first ski flying took place on the Kulm – one of the winter sports highlights of 2023.

For the German ski jumpers it was a mediocre start at the Kulm: Markus Eisenbichler in eighth place and Andreas Wellinger in ninth place showed a decent competition, but the podium was, as so often this season, very far away.

What is the difference between ski flying and ski jumping?

In ski flying, the hills are larger than in ski jumping. This means: both the inrun track and the landing slope are longer, and the higher speeds during inrun and flight mean that much larger distances are possible.

The current world record in ski flying is 253.3 meters. The Austrian Stefan Kraft flew further in Vikersund/Norway in 2017 than anyone on skis before or since. For comparison: When ski jumping from a large hill, the distances are usually between 130 and 150 meters.

There are currently four ski flying hills from which ski jumpers regularly hold their competitions: the “Kulm” in Bad Mitterndorf/Austria, Planica/Slovenia, Vikersund/Norway – and in the Allgäu the Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill in Oberstdorf. The next Ski Flying World Cup in Oberstdorf is expected to take place in winter 2023/24.

The ski flying competitions are part of the Ski Jumping World Cup 2022/23.

Ski flying at the Kulm today without the Allgäuers Karl Geiger and Philipp Raimund

The German ski jumpers compete today at the Kulm without team world champion Karl Geiger at the Ski Flying World Cup. The poor form of Oberstdorfer should train like youngster Philipp Raimund. “We want to work with Karl on his basic jumps in order to prepare him as best as possible for the home World Cup in Willingen,” said national coach Stefan Horngacher.

Geiger only finished 20th, 22nd and 34th in Sapporo, Japan. Markus Eisenbichler, Andreas Wellinger, Stephan Leyhe, Constantin Schmid, Pius Paschke and Justin Lisso have been nominated for the first ski flying of the season.
