Six National Institutions Develop Red and White Vaccines

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Minister of Research and Technology Bambang Brodjonegoro said that the development of the Red and White vaccine was done by Indonesian experts and produced in Indonesia. A total of six Red and White vaccine development institutions use different platforms.

The six institutions are the Bandung Eijkman Institute, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), the University of Indonesia (UI), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and Airlangga University (Unair).

“This shows how concerned Indonesian lecturers and researchers are in finding solutions to handling Covid-19,” said Bambang, in the talkshow ‘Update KPC PEN: Covid-19 Vaccine Safety Principles’ at Graha BNPB Jakarta, Tuesday (27/10).

Bambang emphasized that Indonesia also needs vaccine independence. As a country with 270 million people, he continued, it would be risky if Indonesia was dependent on foreign vaccines.

“So it needs capability not only in production but also in research and development,” he said.

Need time

Bambang said that vaccine research usually takes a long time. There are even some diseases that have not been vaccinated, such as HIV and Ebola.

However, due to the short duration of time, efforts to find a vaccine have encountered obstacles in using cells. There are materials that must be imported, for example, mammalian cells and even animals used for testing must also be imported.

“This import process sometimes delays research activities,” he said.

Meanwhile, Head of the Covid-19 Handling Task Force Doni Monardo said the number of recovered patients reached 315,000 cases. The percentage of cure rate is 80.84 percent. There is a difference of 7.24 percent with the global cure rate.

“This is due to the harmonious cooperation between the central government and the regions, the private sector, and the community. Also the hard work of doctors and other health workers will increase the experience and knowledge in treating patients better,” said Doni.
