Six months without Alba variant, in Pontevedra | Radio Pontevedra

From this morning the Variante de Alba, in Pontevedra, the road that connects the national highways of Vilagarcía and Santiago, has been closed to traffic. A measure that will last six months, according to the estimates of the construction company. During that time, only residents and businesses located in the area will be allowed access. Other vehicles are advised to use the road that connects Curro, Portela and San Antoniño in Barro.

The road traffic cut is due to the construction by the Xunta of a pedestrian path that will improve the safety of pedestrians and of the thousands of pilgrims who have to cross that road every year, included in the Portuguese Way to Santiago.

Although the term of the works is 6 months, the technicians hope to be able to reopen the road by the end of the year. But while the work lasts, only residents and businesses located in the area will be allowed access. A fenced pass was also set up for pilgrims.

The other vehicles will have to use the alternative detour for A Portela-Curro (the EP-506 road) or access from Pontevedra to the Vilagarcía road or the N550 towards Santiago.

Jaime Alvariñas, a technician from the Oresa company, explained to Radio Pontevedra that several options were considered but finally it was decided to cut the entire variant because it was the most operational solution.
