Six Extinction Rebellion protesters arrested in action on Damrak | NOW

Six protesters from the Extinction Rebellion activist group were arrested by the police on Sunday. A few dozen demonstrators held an action at clothing store C&A on the Damrak in Amsterdam. They repaired old clothes and some of them glued themselves to the shop window of the shop.

The police reports that four protesters were arrested for trespassing for trespassing into the store. Two more people were arrested for destruction.

The arrested protesters had plastered the shop with chalk. Earlier in the day, the group demonstrated on the Museumplein, where the demonstrators organize lectures and workshops this weekend.

The action at C&A was intended to draw attention, among other things, to the situation of the Uyghurs in China. The ethnic minority is long suppressed by the Chinese government. According to Extinction Rebellion, the clothing company is one of the textile companies that is guilty of taking clothing, which must be forcibly made by the Uyghurs.

Extinction Rebellion activists are holding more promotions

The action group is holding campaigns throughout the month to draw attention to the climate crisis and the large-scale loss of biodiversity. That started September 1 with a jump in the Hofvijver in The Hague in front of the Binnenhof.

Friday was another promotion by Extinction Rebellion on the Zuidas disbanded when some 150 protesters had blocked an intersection. According to the Safety Region, they largely adhered to the corona measures. Demonstrators had glued themselves to the ground and riveted themselves together with long pipes.

On Monday, a new blockade of the Zuidas, the financial heart of Amsterdam, is planned. The group believes that companies have too much say in climate policy.

The municipality of Amsterdam states in a letter that the demonstrations are allowed under certain conditions and with due observance of the corona measures, but says it will intervene in the event of blockages. On the Museumplein, protesters are allowed to demonstrate for a maximum of four hours per day this weekend.
