Six authors apply for the Jānis Baltvilkas prize in children’s and young people’s literature The news


Riga, July 6, LETA. Six authors are applying for the Jānis Baltvilkas Prize in children’s and young people’s literature, the representative of the Latvian Children’s and Youth Literature Council (LBJLP) Silvija Tretjakova informed the LETA agency.

Inese Paklone was nominated for the award for the collection of poems “Zveru barošana” (published in “Pētergailis”), Lote Vilma Vītiņa for the book “Udenstornis”, Inese Zandere for the story “Divas Almas” and Luize Pastore for the short story “Children of Happiness” (all three – publishing house ” Big and small”), as well as Laura Vinogradova for the story “Dad and dog” (publishing house “Zvaigzne ABC”).

The international laureate of the Jānis Baltvilkas award in 2022 has become the Estonian writer Juhani Pitseps for the novel “Ir mencens zelta skīsis” published by “Jāņas Rozes apgāpa”, as well as the novel’s translator Marika Muzikante.

Anna Vaivare is applying for the Jānis Baltvilkas prize in book art for the illustrations for Gunta Šnipke’s poems “Inese māja” (“Big and small”), Gundega Muzikante for the illustrations for Pitsep’s novel “There is a moon in the gold ship” (“Jāņa Rozes apgāds”) and the collection of Paklone’s poems. Feeding the beasts”.

Anete Bajāre-Babčukas are also applying for the award for the illustrations for Zander’s book “Two Almas”, Ūna Laukmane for the illustrations for Arnold Auzis’s collection of poems “Triks and chicks” (publishing house “Liels und mazs”) and Sabīne Baumane for the illustrations for Renāte Bērante’s book “Kur es biju , when I was not, or the story of Monti” (provision “Monte Stories”).

On the other hand, the “Jaunaudze” prize of AS “Latvijas valsts meži” for the debut in children’s and young people’s literature and book art is claimed by Evija Pintāne for the illustrations for Pastore’s short story “Children of Happiness”, Bērante and Baumane for the book “Kur es biju, kad es es nebija, or the story of Monti ” and Iveta Troalik for the novel “It will be better soon” (provided by “Mansard”).

The representative of LBJLP noted that this year the award jury, which included literary scholars Ilze Stikāne and Rudīte Rinkeviča, art historian Baiba Nurža, artists Indra Sproģe and Dace Ziemele, as well as director Krista Burāne, has read and evaluated 84 books, paying attention to the quality of the text, while 55 additional editions read and examined in search of a contender for the book art award.

The awards named after Baltvilkas will be presented for the 18th time on Baltvilkas’ birthday on July 24.

On the “Lsm.lv” portal, the readers’ vote for this year’s nominated works will take place from July 11.

Every year, in connection with the Baltvilkas award, readings of the latest children’s literature are held, in which the laureates and nominees of the previous years’ Baltvilkas award, as well as debutants, participate. Writers Halina Vdovichenko and Tania Postavna and their book translators Maris Salējs and Mara Poliakova will participate in this year’s readings “With bees… and cats”, which will be more in the spirit of supporting Ukraine. International laureate Pitseps will also take part in the readings with an application for a new children’s book translated by Muzikante.

At the award ceremony, which will be held on July 24 at 6 p.m. in the Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia, there will be a musical premiere of solo songs created especially for this event with the poetry of Baltvilkas. The author of the songs is composer Olesya Kozlovska, they will be performed by soprano Katažina Dudareva. The award ceremony will be led by Ance Strazda and Klāvs Mellis.
