Sir Michael Caine says goodbye to his acting career. He just wants to write

English actor and writer Michael Caine is retiring. In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, he revealed that the comedy Bestsellers, in which he plays an annoying aging writer and which he presented at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival this year, is probably his latest film. Instead of playing, he wants to write.

“Paradoxically, it turned out to be my last role,” Caine said. “I haven’t worked for two years and I have problems with my spine, which is a sign on my feet. So I can’t walk very well,” said the 88-year-old two Oscar winner.

In his opinion, he wrote several books that celebrated success. “So now I’m no longer an actor, but a writer, which is nice, because as an actor you have to get up at half past five and go to the studio. But as a writer, you can start writing without getting out of bed,” he added.

In Bestsellers, directed by American director Lina Roessler as her feature debut, Caine embarks on her final tour to save a failing publishing house. American actress Aubrey Plaza plays an energetic young woman in the film, the heiress of this once famous publishing house. The film was shot in 2019 in Montreal.

Caine said in an interview that he had not received an offer in two years, and recalled his old age. “There are not many scenarios with an eighty-eight-year-old actor,” he concluded.
