Sinusitis can be caused by toothache, recognize the symptoms

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – An ENT specialist from Siloam Mampang Hospital Jakarta, Fransiskus H. Poluan, said inflammation of the nose and paranasal sinuses or sinusitis toothache can be caused.

“Sinusitis can also be caused by toothache which is called dentogenous sinusitis,” he said.

Common symptoms that occur are nasal congestion, then the presence of mucus in the hole nose. Thick mucus with a green, yellow, or brown color. It can also be accompanied by pain in the face, such as over the cheeks and the area around the middle between the eyes.

“This pain is caused by increased pressure from the fluid in the sinuses or due to thickening of the lining of the nose,” he added.

At the age of children, common symptoms are accompanied by coughing due to difficulty in removing mucus. To determine the condition of inflammation, a CT-Scan of the paranasal sinuses can be performed.

“The goal is to find a buildup of fluid or thickening of the mucosa (the layer of mucous membrane that functions to make air after inhalation),” he explained.

In addition, an endoscopy can also be performed to determine whether there is swelling or narrowing in the sinus estuary. Any disease that is not treated properly will result in complications. In the case of sinusitis it can have an impact on swollen eyes that can affect vision. Sinusitis does not always have to be treated with surgery as a solution.

“There are actions that can be taken for non-surgical steps, such as improving your lifestyle, avoiding exposure to dust that causes allergies, exercising regularly to boost your immune system,” explained the doctor who graduated from Padjadjaran University.

In addition to improving your lifestyle, avoiding exposure to substances that can irritate the inner lining (mucosa) of the nose can also be done with treatment methods that can reduce inflammation/swelling and can reduce allergies, as well as drugs that can reduce blockages. Antibiotics should be given as wisely as possible because most sinusitis is caused by viruses, not bacteria.

After maximal treatment has been carried out but no changes have been found, the last step will be surgery with the aim of opening the closed or blocked canal and maintaining the layers that are still functioning properly.

“So, as long as no complications are found in rhinosinusitis or sinusitis, surgery is not necessary,” he said.
