Jannik Sinner advanced to the semifinals of the ATP Finals on Thursday, defeating Alexander Zverev in straight sets while Felix Auger-Aliassime secured a victory over Ben Shelton.
Sinner’s win underscores the growing divide between the top players – himself and Carlos Alcaraz – and the rest of the ATP Tour. Despite a strong serving performance and creating numerous break point opportunities,Zverev was unable to convert, ultimately falling to Sinner’s consistent power and precision.
Zverev consistently found himself thwarted by Sinner’s clutch serving; whenever the German gained an advantage, sinner responded with an ace or service winner. Zverev also appeared to become passive during rallies, allowing Sinner to dictate play.
The German had two break points in the opening game and further chances in three of Sinner’s second-set service games, but Sinner saved them all. While Zverev occasionally outpaced sinner with his forehand, these moments were infrequent.
Statistically, Sinner dominated, finishing with 28 winners against 14 unforced errors and losing only eight points on his first serve.
“I felt like I was serving very well in the critically important moments. I tried to play the best tennis possible when it mattered,” Sinner stated after the match.
He added, “Sascha played great tennis and I am very pleased with how I handled it.”
