Sinn Féin Endorses Catherine Connolly in Irish Presidential Race
DUBLIN – Sinn Féin has announced its support for independent candidate Catherine Connolly in the upcoming Irish presidential election, marking a notable move by the party to back a candidate from outside its ranks.Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald stated the party will also provide financial support to connolly’s campaign, aiming to present voters with a “clear choice” and “hope” alongside other opposition parties already supporting her.
The endorsement signals Sinn Féin’s desire for a broad coalition focused on improving life for workers, families, and communities, and challenging the current government. “We need a coalition that is about people, focused on making life better for workers, for families and communities, resolute to create a future we can be proud of,” McDonald said. “This election provides an chance to bring together the widest possible coalition of voters to take on this failed and tired Government.”
Connolly, a TD representing galway West in Dáil Éireann since 2016, previously served as deputy speaker of the Dáil for four years and has a background as both a barrister and clinical psychologist. Sinn Féin consulted with its activists and elected politicians “on multiple occasions” before making the decision, recognizing the meaning of supporting an independent candidate. McDonald highlighted Connolly’s commitment to the Irish language and history as indicative of her advocacy for Irish reunification.
The Sinn Féin leader also raised concerns that citizens in Northern Ireland are currently unable to vote in the presidential election, as only residents of the Republic of Ireland are eligible under existing rules.
The Irish presidential election is scheduled for October 24th, with nominations having closed on September 20th. The election will determine the successor to current President Michael D Higgins, whose term ends in November.
