Singer Morrissey angry because “The Simpsons” poke fun at him: “Complete stupidity”

The episode “Panic in the streets of Springfield” aired in the United States last Sunday. Daughter Lisa becomes obsessed with a music group, The Snuffs, and befriends the singer, Quilloughby. That character is a young, depressed singer who is vegan and has a quiff, just like Morrissey in the 80s. But in the end Quilloughby turns out to be nothing more than a product of her imagination. Lisa’s dream is shattered when Quilloughby transforms onstage into a gray, overweight, flesh-eating man who takes hard positions against migrants.

Morrissey, the lead singer of the British cult band The Smiths, is nowhere mentioned by name, but the resemblance is clear. There are multiple links to him and to The Smiths. For example “Panic in the streets of Springfield” is an allusion to the hit “Panic”, and The Snuffs sing songs like “How late is then”, “Hamburger homicide” and “Everyone is horrid except me and possibly you”, all references to songs from The Smiths and Morrissey.

The voice of the character Quilloughby is voiced by the British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, known for the series “Sherlock” and the film “The imitation game”.
