Singer, rapper and actor Aaron Carter has passed away at the age of 34, his rep confirmed to NPR.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Saturday that police are investigating the suspicious death at Carter’s home in Lancaster, California.

Carter’s girlfriend Melanie Martin asked for privacy while the family wept.

“We are still coming to terms with this sad reality,” Martin said in a statement Saturday. “Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated. “

Carter had his first hit when he was only 9, a cover of the Jets’ 80s hit “Crush on You”.

Carter’s 2000 album, Aaron’s party (come and get it), has sold 3 million copies and produced hit singles, including the title track and “I Want Candy”. Videos of her have been shown regularly on Disney and Nickelodeon.

The Florida native then went on tour with his older brother Nick Carter’s band, the Backstreet Boys, released four studio albums and appeared Dancing with the Stars.

His life was also full of pitfalls. Carter was arrested multiple times on drug charges, aired his family feuds on social media, and accused his brothers of sexually assaulting him.
