Singapore Corona Doubles Every Week, Serious Sick Cases Soar!

Jakarta

raging COVID-19, Singapore reported cases of severe symptoms and the number of hospitalized Corona patients increased in recent days. Hundreds of people were infected from large COVID-19 clusters such as offices to dormitories.

As of September 17, Singapore recorded more than 900 new cases of COVID-19, 838 of which were community transmission and 96 were infections in dormitory residents. Singapore’s Ministry of Health said 241 of them were elderly people aged around 60 years.

Plus one imported case, the total number of new COVID-19 cases reached 935 people.

Big cluster

The Ministry of Health said that it is monitoring a total of 12 large clusters with new cases. A new cluster of cases was discovered at Sembcorp Marine, for a total of 26 cases. There were 23 infected staff members, and three other household contacts.

“This cluster was caused by transmission at work with further spread to household contacts,” said the MOH, quoted by Channel News Asia.

The Sembcorp Marine Tuas Boulevard Yard cluster continues to expand to 107 cases. Meanwhile, the Orange Valley Nursing Home cluster in Simei recorded 17 positive people for Corona.

“Most of the cases in this cluster are residents of Kian Teck Drive 38 dormitory and all new cases have been quarantined,” the Ministry of Health said.

Another, larger cluster is from the Chinatown Complex. There were 256 cases identified from the cluster, 187 of which were kiosk owners and assistants, 11 cleaners and 58 case contacts from families.

Even so, the local Health Ministry said cases in the hospital cluster were declining.

Hospitalization cases are increasing

The number of hospitalized Corona patients has also increased. A total of 813 cases. While most are under control and under intensive supervision, 90 of them are seriously ill and require oxygen supplementation, 14 are critically in the intensive care unit.

“This is an increase compared to 77 cases of serious illness and 12 patients in critical condition as of Thursday,” the report said.

“Among those who fell seriously ill, 82 were seniors over the age of 60,” the MOH said.

Vaccine coverage

MOH records show 82 percent of Singaporeans have been fully vaccinated, while 84 percent have received one dose up to Thursday (17/9/2021).

Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said Singapore should be prepared to see cases COVID-19 daily exceeds the 1,000 mark, soon. Mr Ong noted on Friday that the 26th day of the current wave shows daily cases have doubled on a weekly basis.

“I think let’s be prepared for possibly crossing the 1,000 mark soon. That’s not unexpected, it’s the typical behavior of a transmission wave that usually peaks between four and up to eight weeks, or 30, 40 sometimes 50 days,” he said.
