Simón talks about Madrid’s proposal to wear a mask in all spaces

The best mask is the distance of two meters” In this way, the person in charge of the Coordination Center for Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, has answered the proposal of the Government of Madrid to wear masks in all public spaces. In his opinion, “now it is time to overreact a little”, something logical in the phase of control of the epidemic in which Spain is, but remember that adopting a measure of this nature must be done in a well-reasoned way, since many population groups, like children, people with anxiety, respiratory patients, who they cannot wear this protective garment all day. And as it repeats frequently, a measure that cannot be applied loses its effectiveness.

Simón has asked the population not to forget these days the more than 26,000 people who died in this epidemic (176 in the last 24 hours), the more than 228,000 infected (426 in the last hours), the hospitalized …“We cannot forget them in a week of everything lived. We must continue to exercise caution, continue to maintain physical distance, the main instrument to fight against the Covid-19.

Because the other measure, the possibility that the population has passed the disease en masse and, therefore, is immune, Simón believes that it is not effective. Waiting for the first data from the serological study, the percentage of immune population does not even reach 15% that some studies point to. The data on health personnel, a highly exposed group, is close to 11% of those infected in only two hospitals. In the rest it is between 3 and 5%.

The technical manager of the Ministry of Health believes that it is time to move on to another phase in obtaining data, that of detect and individually identify suspected cases. It has already been asked at autonomous communities that they contribute new data that allows to follow each one of the suspected cases for their diagnosis and those of their contacts.

Regarding the new rule that has come into force today in relation to the need for foreigners arriving in Spain to pass a quarantine, Simón believes that it is logical, since once the epidemic is controlled in Spain we cannot risk the virus entering from abroad, as happened in February. He also believes that it is not logical that a citizen cannot travel to his second residence in the Balearic Islands and a foreigner can.

Do you approve of having to wear a mask on the street?
