The Cuban troubadour Silvio Rodríguez told how his participation in the act of repudiation that they did to the troubadour Mike Porcel 40 years ago, after the Mariel migration crisis.
“I always said I did not agree to do any repudiation. And although I tried to miss the night they agreed to do so, they found me”, commented the musician in his blog Second date.
He said that he is on the outskirts of Porcel’s house a “small group of colleagues and a lady from the CoR” told him that they were waiting for him to start. Rodriguez confessed that returning to this issue remains bitter and that he is not sure of the veracity of an alleged letter of repudiation that La Nueva Trova wrote to Mike and in which its authors label him as a “traitor” for leaving the island.
The troubadour Cuban official recalled that he, along with Vicente Feliú and Alberto Falla had appeared in the house of Porcel a few days before, since they received information that he was selling his belongings to go to El Mariel and reunite with his family in States United.
“We told him that, if it was true that he wanted to leave, he could count on us, that we did not question that right to anyone,” Silvio said in his comment. He says that Mike was “obviously hurt” and to deny the news he agreed to give statements to the official press.
The picture was complicated after a military coup in Bolivia that ended with 4 Cuban troubadours imprisoned, he said in his story. “In the midst of this uncertainty, they told us that Mike had been seen in El Mariel, trying to get on a ship,” said Silvio Rodríguez, who considered himself “cheated” by Mike Porcel’s decision.
