Nearly three hundred friends, acquaintances and relatives walked a quiet journey for Ronald Mekkring on Monday evening in Hoogezand (24). His body was found on Friday in the Winschoterdiep.

The tour started in the parking lot of the Dr. Aletta Jacobscollege in Hoogezand. From there the procession ran along Kerkstraat in the direction of Van Noortstraat, the street where Ronald lived with his girlfriend. The group held a minute’s silence there.
The tour ended at the Winschoterdiep near the Welkoop. There the participants put candles and flowers on the quay.
Worrying loss
Ronald Mekkring went missing during the New Year. He was lighting fireworks in the Van Noortstraat, after which he walked out of the street and disappeared. For days, officers with sniffer dogs, relatives and friends scoured Hoogezand, with no result.
His body was found in the Winschoterdiep on Friday afternoon with the help of sonar equipment. According to the police, research showed that there is no crime.
Donation promotion
A donation campaign was set up this weekend to give Mekkring a nice farewell. The intended goal of ten thousand euros was already achieved on Saturday. The counter is now at more than eleven thousand euros.
