Signs of High Cholesterol, One of which is a Purple Tongue

TEMPO.CO, JakartaHigh cholesterol can cause several health complications. Increased high cholesterol levels are often not realized because of the minimal symptoms that appear.

High cholesterol causes plaque buildup in the arteries which can result in complications such as blood stasis or stagnant blood flow. This can be detected from the color change tongue.

According to the journal Frontiers in Medicinedark purple tongue and enlarged sublingual vessels of the tongue are important signs of blood stasis. “The tip of the tongue is bluish-purple and there may also be bloodstains on the tip. The sublingual vessels are dark or twisted and thick,” he explains Science Direct.

Blood stasis is a symptom of high cholesterol. It occurs when blood cannot flow properly through tissues. This can reduce the velocity of blood flow, cause partial obstruction, and increase pressure on the vessels.

In most cases, a purple tongue means that the blood is not circulating properly in the body. This can indicate that the blood is failing to provide sufficient oxygen to the body’s tissues. It can also mean that the blood is dark red indicating a lack of oxygen, as opposed to lighter red blood which is rich in oxygen.

Other Causes of Purple Tongue

Several other conditions related to the health of blood vessels can cause a purple or blue tongue discoloration. Central cyanosis, which causes poor arterial oxygenation, is associated with clubbing and bluish discoloration of mucous membranes such as the tongue.

According to Oral Cancer Foundation, tongue cancer may produce a deep red or purple color on the inner surface of the mouth. Purple or bluish tongue can also indicate a vitamin deficiency.
