JAKARTA Signs of a heart attack can be seen when toothache . Periodontitis, also known as gum disease, is a gum infection that attacks the soft tissues and bones that support teeth.

An early sign of this condition is bleeding gums when brushing your teeth, which usually occurs during gingivitis, a milder form of periodontitis. Although bleeding gums are relatively common, they should not be ignored.

Periodontitis in the early stages can still be easily cured. However, more advanced and severe forms of the disease can trigger other serious illnesses. Several oral surveys have shown that at any one time, one in four adults has moderate to severe periodontal disease.

Signs and symptoms of this condition include swollen gums, bright red, dark red or purplish gums, gums that feel tender to the touch. Pink toothbrush after brushing, spitting blood when brushing or flossing, bad breath and pus between teeth and gums.

A new study conducted in Sweden, involving 1,578 participants with an average age of 62 years, who underwent dental examinations between 2010 and 2014. Of these patients, 985 were classified as healthy, while 489 had moderate periodontitis and 113 had severe periodontitis.

During the 6.2-year follow-up period, there were 205 primary endpoint events, defined as deaths from all causes, heart attack or non-fatal stroke, or heart failure heavy. The investigators observed that participants with periodontitis at baseline had a 49% higher probability of the primary end points listed above.

“The risk of having a cardiovascular event during follow-up was higher in participants with periodontitis, increasing with severity. This is especially seen in patients who have already had a myocardial infarction,” said Dr Ferrannini.

The destruction of periodontal tissue in people with gum disease can facilitate the transfer of germs or bacteria into the bloodstream. This can accelerate harmful changes in the blood vessels of germs entering the bloodstream or increase systemic inflammation that is harmful to blood vessels.

Deposits of germs in the lining of the heart are called endocarditis, and are usually triggered by bacteria, fungi, or other germs that enter the body through the mouth. During the early stages of periodontitis, gum inflammation caused by bacteria can occur in as little as five days, so it’s important to treat symptoms as soon as they appear.
