This drug from the antimetabolite class has a powerful anti-inflammatory power. It requires regular clinical and biological monitoring.
Gastrointestinal disorders
The most frequent side effects are digestive disorders (nausea, loss of appetite, heartburn, abdominal pain and stomatitis), often associated, at the start of treatment, with fatigue on the day of taking the drug. They remain moderate and transient.
What to do
● It is sufficient to follow the prescription of folic acid supplementation (vitamin B9) which aims to prevent or, at least, to limit the gastrointestinal, but also hepatic and haematological, undesirable effects of the treatment.
● An evening intake may be recommended to limit digestive signs and fatigue.
● In the event of poor digestive tolerance, switching to the injectable route is sometimes considered.
The risk of infection
Treatment with methotrexate puts you at risk of infection. Colds, coughs, sore throats, urinary burns … No symptoms should be overlooked.
