SID calendar sheet on January 15th: Super Bowl I – Sports

Munich (SID) – Everything was different the first time. The Super Bowl was not called the Super Bowl, it was simply called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. It wasn’t sold out either. The Coliseum in Los Angeles could have seated 92,000 spectators, and almost 62,000 attended. A 30-second television commercial was only $ 42,000 (up from $ 5.6 million in Super Bowl 54 in February). Instead, the game was broadcast live by two TV stations, with 51.18 million Americans watching.

But even then it was about a damn lot. On January 15, 1967, the champion of the National Football League (NFL), which was founded in 1920, and the champion of the competing American Football League (AFL), which only started in 1960, met for the first time. The NFL was the dominant top dog, the AFL clubs belonged to investors who had been denied entry into the league with their own franchise by the NFL.

The AFL had started with eight teams, including the Boston Patriots (now the New England Patriots), the New York Titans (now the New York Jets), the Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans) or the Dallas Texans (now the Kansas City Chiefs) . After some labor pains, the AFL increasingly established itself as a hip, more offensive competition to the NFL. She relied on black college players early on and was soon poaching in the NFL squads.

Because they could not get rid of their competition, the NFL soon relied on cooperation. The basis for a merger was laid in June 1966, but seven months later it should first be clarified: which league is the better. The result was clear. The Green Bay Packers under their legendary head coach Vince Lombardi defeated the Kansas City Chiefs of AFL “inventor” Lamar Hunt with 35:10. Incidentally, the NFL and AFL played alternately with the ball.

The merger to form the NFL with the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC) was completed in 1970 after the Packers (33:14 against the Oakland Raiders) and the sensational New York Jets from the AFL (16: 7 against the Baltimore Colts) had won the Championship Game. Whereby: When the Jets won, the game was officially called Super Bowl, and the Roman numerals were introduced for Super Bowl V two years later.
