Shots Fired Near Under-20 World Cup Water Polo Match in Salvador, Brazil; No Injuries Reported

Brazilian police confirmed monday that no injuries were reported during the incident, which occurred in the Pituba neighborhood of Salvador.

The match, which China ultimately won 12-8, was temporarily halted when players dove for cover after hearing gunshots outside the arena. The incident occurred during the first quarter, with China leading Canada 3-2 at the time. Players and officials quickly reacted, taking shelter behind barriers near the pool.

Marco Antônio Lemos, head of the Bahia state water sports federation, stated that the match was paused for approximately one minute while authorities addressed the situation. “Our team saw that the police was taking care of it,” Lemos said in a released statement. Police investigations revealed the gunfire stemmed from a confrontation with a suspected local thief attempting to evade capture outside the venue.

This is the first time Brazil is hosting the Under-20 World Cup, a 16-team tournament running from August 12th to August 25th, 2024, at the Federacao Aquatica Baiana arena.
