Shorter stays and trips by car. This is how the covid changed the paths and holidays of the Czechs

How much the covidu-19 pandemic cut the wings of Czech travelers and excursionists in 2020 is clearly illustrated by data from the Czech Statistical Office (CSO), which has now been pointed out by the ERC Evropská pojišťovna.

According to statistics, the Czechs made 2.4 million trips for the whole of last year, which is a decrease of as much as 67 percent compared to 2019. Even in times of restrictions, measures, regulations and lockdowns, however, Croatia managed to defend its position as the most popular holiday destination. Slovakia and Austria ended up behind him, ie countries that can be easily reached by car. The average length of stays has also changed and the number of tours directed by travel agencies has decreased.

Although Croatia remained at the imaginary gold rung of the popularity rankings, the covid pandemics and related restrictions have manifested themselves here as well. According to the CZSO, 412 thousand Czechs went to Croatia last year, ie 44% less than in 2019. 353 thousand Czechs traveled to Slovakia and 275 thousand to Austria, which recorded the lowest year-on-year decline of 32%.

“The relative success of Austria was due to the almost complete winter season of 2019/2020 and also to the greater preference of Czechs for trips by car to neighboring countries,” says ERV spokesman Vlastimil Divoký. The institution specializes in travel insurance.

Last year, Czechs also stayed abroad for a short time. Longer stays of at least four nights were the shortest in the last five years at 7.8 nights and their share fell from 69.5 percent to 68.3. Proportionally, there was an increase in shorter stays.

As the global pandemic hit air transport hard and people had to travel abroad by car or train for experiences, at the same time there was a significant increase in journeys on their own axis, ie without a travel agency. “While in 2019 55% of all trips were organized on their own, last year it was already 70%,” Divoký emphasized.
