‘Short hairs grow back on the bald spots’ | Columns & Opinion

My hair and scalp seem to be getting a little better every week. Short hairs have been growing back on the bald spots at my crown and coves for a month and a half. Scary of course, because I’m terrified to lose them again.

But that hasn’t happened so far, so there’s hope. I think that hair growth is stimulated by the use of minoxidil: the only hair growth agent approved in the Netherlands for alopecia for men and women.

Reverse

Unfortunately, this remedy also has a downside. Firstly, you have to continue with it for the rest of your life, because as soon as you stop, the hair loss will start again. As if I haven’t already spent enough money on my hairpieces and supplements, there is also about 60 euros per month on top for the bottles of minoxidil. But for now I’m sure about this.

A second downside are the side effects. The product dries out my scalp and gives me flakes. It was also itchy at first, but luckily that has subsided. In the meantime I have switched variants. In my new bottle the addition of propylene glycol has been replaced by alcohol. Apparently this weird word causes the worst dehydration and alcohol has less influence on it.

hair growth

Then there is the hair growth. Yes, the hair growth on my skull is very nice! But the hair growth on the rest of my body a bit less. The most annoying thing is the hair growth I get on my face. I also get extra hairs on my arms and back, but fortunately they are less noticeable. Now I try to think in solutions, because too much hair must be able to come off! Off to the beautician.

My idea was to have my face waxed. Sure enough, another extra monthly (I think?) recurring cost item. Only after a short visit I was outside again within 10 minutes. The lady in question understood my issue with facial hair, but at the same time saw a lot of pigment in my face.

Not only on my face, but all over my body I have a lot of freckles and moles. It doesn’t seem to be good for skin like mine to wax, because the hard pulling can make the pigment move and develop further. And now?

Painful treatment

Epilation can be a solution. But to tackle my whole face with tweezers? Then I can set aside a day for this every week. So I started my search online for something that might help. I found a facial epilator. 100 euros poorer (maybe the honeymoon should go to Texel after all), but after two days it was at home. Straight out of the box and use… Ouch!

Can you imagine having about 10 blades stinging your face at the same time? That’s exactly the feeling. And especially in the sensitive areas around my mouth, the pain is barely bearable. But the good news: it works!

My tactic now is to tackle small pieces of my face at a time to dose the pain a bit. And what I don’t like is the redness. It is a little irritated, but also goes away very quickly.

Panic

Well, you have to pay something to get that desired hair growth on your skull… And as you read, I certainly have that. As long as I see that those new hairs continue to grow and not fall out, I take all those side effects for granted. I especially hope that in the short term the flakes will also become less and my scalp may get used to the product a little more.

The hair loss itself also seems to be slightly less. It’s still way too much, but it’s clumps instead of whole woods. And I might find this even scarier than the new hair growth due to the minoxidil…

Because what if I get used to this new situation and it gets worse again? Am I going to panic again? And when will that happen? Nobody knows and that uncertainty is sometimes the worst of all. I try to live by the day and not to think too far ahead. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t…
