Toilets flooded, water running through the ceiling into shops, and running water all over the floor. Heyhoef shopping center in Tilburg received full coverage on Friday evening during the storm that traveled over the province.

“It suddenly became dark from six o’clock, as if it were already ten o’clock in the evening,” says Linn van Velzen of the Shoeby clothing store in the shopping center. “That was crazy.”

In this video you can see how big the flooding in the shopping center was:

“It came in through the sewage system”
When the storm broke, Shoeby was one of the shops damaged. The men’s department, to be precise. “There was a lot of water,” she says. “I think this came in through the sewer system. We took all the water from the store with all our might. There was some damage in the warehouse, the floor was damaged there. But nothing happened to the clothes in the store. So we are open again on Saturday. “

Linn was working in the women’s department when the water entered the store. That shop is next to the men’s store. “A colleague who works in the men’s department came to us to ask if we had anything to get the water out, because it was completely blank there.”

She was finished working at the time, but Linn never hesitated and also rolled up her sleeves. I could have gone home and waved happily at them that I was gone, but you can’t make that. That is not collegial. So I helped them get the water out. ”

More often affected
It was not only a hit at Shoeby. “Several stores suffered from the rain,” says Linn. For example, she saw that the Lidl supermarket was closing and that flower shop Allure had been hit. “There the ceiling came down. But they knew, because they often suffer from this, how to act.”

“It was hit again, yes,” sighs Lilian who works at Allure. “This was the third time. It is always the same problem. This has to do with a drain pipe that is incorporated in the ceiling here. It has to do with that. The water entered the case through the ceiling.”

Big advantage
According to her, there is no major damage. “The only luck is that this happened at the front of our case. That’s the part where people come in, that’s an open piece. So it was really just a matter of pushing everything aside and making sure you protect the things that are vulnerable to water . Set electronics aside and bring them back. Since this happened to us for the third time, we knew what to do. That is the great advantage of previous times. We have learned from that. “

Also at Subway the whole thing was on Friday evening, Iris Govers says. “We have a rolling door here and if it rains hard, the water will get underneath it,” she explains. “There really was a layer of water inside. We had to pull the water away with a tractor.” The products were not affected. “They’re in the back, luckily.”

Extremely
The sandwich shop also suffered water damage last week, during the downpour that then spread over the province. “But that was less intense. It was then wet in our store, but not as extreme as Friday night.” I had seen the announcement of the bad weather and suddenly saw it getting dark. I thought it would be a shower. Fortunately, we have a good team that works in all weathers. I am really proud of my people. “

Insurer Interpolis announces that three hundred damage reports were received as a result of the severe weather. “This is 150 percent more than on a normal Saturday,” said spokesperson Joost van Buchem. “Many reports come from Tilburg and Rijen.”
