EU Commissioner Highlights Safety Lapses in Shein and Temu Products
European Commissioner Michael McGrath has expressed notable concern regarding the safety standards of products sold by online retailers Shein and Temu,noting their apparent disregard for European Union laws.
A recent survey conducted by the Commission revealed several alarming product deficiencies.These included pacifier holders for babies that lacked essential breathing holes, a critical safety feature mandated by EU regulations.
Further findings indicated the presence of toxic chemicals in rainwear and sunglasses sold without adequate UV protection.Additionally, children’s shorts were found with cords deemed too long, and makeup contained butylpenyl methyl propopional, a substance banned since 2022 due to potential birth defect risks.
The Commission insists that these hazardous products must be removed from the market and that the platforms must adhere to EU regulations.McGrath stated that European companies are unfairly disadvantaged when competing against entities that do not comply with established laws.
The EU is also re-evaluating its customs policies for packages valued under EUR 150,which are currently duty-free.This consideration includes potentially removing the duty-free status and imposing fees to curb small purchases and generate revenue for enhanced customs inspections.
