Shaun Whites makes a comeback | Alpine skiing

SNOWBOARD ⋅ US superstar Shaun White (34) finished fourth in his first snowboard competition in three years at the World Cup final in Aspen, Colorado.

When he returned to the halfpipes, Californian Shaun White saw his new rival, 19-year-old Japanese Totsuka Yuto, in top form. Yuto triumphed in Aspen thanks to an almost perfect first run. Less than a year before the Beijing Winter Olympics, Yuto is the favorite. In the last 13 months, Yuto has won the most important events (US Open, X-Games, World Championship) all for themselves.

But: Shaun White is to be expected. The motivation for White’s comeback is clear: ideally, next February in Beijing he will win the gold medal for the fourth time in the halfpipe. White was a “Double Cork 1440” in two of his three finals in Aspen. With this trick, placed twice in a row in the halfpipe, he triumphed in Pyeongchang in 2018 in his last competition until Sunday.

The Swiss finalists in Aspen couldn’t keep up with the best: David Hablützel finished eighth, Jan Scherrer (without a successful run) tenth. (sda)
