Sharp increase in number of corona patients in intensive care: ‘This is too high’

“This is too high. We took into account a thousand corona patients in intensive care at the end of this week. I would have preferred to have 500 patients at the end of this week, but if this number has already been reached on Monday, it will be going too fast “said chairman Diederik Gommers.

The NVIC still calls the situation ‘in control’, but at the same time acknowledges that the increase is a setback.

The past few days have been hard work to expand the intensive care capacity of hospitals. For example, work is being carried out towards a national capacity of approximately 1,500 intensive care beds, where the normal capacity is 1,150 beds. Some of these beds are occupied by patients with syndromes other than corona.

Crucial week

“We are equipped to receive 1,000 corona patients in intensive care this week,” said NVIC Chairman Gommers. “But what will happen next week with the rate of admission of patients? I find that exciting.”

Ventilation equipment is required for intensive care treatment. Minister De Jonge (Health, Welfare and Sport) announced in a press conference on Monday that there are 2000 respirators on order. It is not known when these can be delivered.
