For his first report on the economic impact of illegal retransmissions of sporting events, the Hadopi (high authority in charge of combating internet piracy) confirms the explosion of the phenomenon. According to the body responsible for the fight against internet piracy, 3.4 million Internet users have watched matches live using illegal means such as streaming or illicit IPTV offers. A figure up 70% compared to the average observed for the year 2019: 2 million “pirates”.
According to the instance, the arrival of Mediapro as the main broadcaster of Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 could be one of the avenues explaining the strong growth in this figure: “It is possible that the illicit consumption of sports content will experience strong variations linked to the arrival of this new actor. “
A global shortfall of one billion euros
For audiovisual and sports broadcasting players, Hadopi assesses the total shortfall linked to piracy at more than one billion euros in 2019. The body admits, however, its inability to precisely quantify the use of illicit IPTV, which allows you to watch up to several thousand channels live for a few euros per month, via an application or a box.
The Hadopi report is made public while the audiovisual bill and its anti-piracy measures has still not been adopted due to the health crisis. Measures eagerly awaited by sports channels and professional leagues which market broadcasting rights.
