Pakistan’s Prime Minister Claims Downing of Seven Indian Fighter Jets

NEW YORK – pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif asserted during a speech at the UN General Assembly that his country’s forces downed seven Indian fighter aircraft during recent conflicts, claiming the planes were reduced to “scrapping.” The statement, delivered amidst a broader address on terrorism, human rights, and climate change, marks a important escalation in rhetoric between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

The claim comes against a backdrop of long-standing tensions and intermittent clashes along the Line of Control in Kashmir. While autonomous verification of the downed aircraft is currently unavailable, Sharif’s declaration underscores the volatile security situation in the region and raises concerns about potential further escalation. The Prime Minister did not specify a timeframe for when these events occurred, only referencing “the past months.”

Sharif also used his address to call for international action against extremist ideologies, specifically citing concerns about Hindu nationalism in India as a “global threat to any religion or person.” He welcomed the UN’s appointment of special representatives to combat Islamophobia.

Beyond security matters, Sharif highlighted the devastating impact of climate change on Pakistan, citing $34 billion in damages and loss of life from floods in 2022 and 2025. He argued that despite contributing less than 1% of global emissions,Pakistan is disproportionately affected and faces a cycle of debt as a result of seeking aid. He stated the country has declared a climate emergency and is seeking international support.

in a surprising turn, Sharif also revealed that he nominated former US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, describing him as a “real peace man” who he said ended seven wars, despite receiving no assistance from the UN.
