
Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Announces Australasian Tour with Renowned Soloists
The esteemed Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is set to embark on its first tour of australia and New Zealand since the late 1970s, with performances scheduled for March 2026. The tour will feature celebrated soloists Jian Wang on cello and pianist Serena Wang, who will be making her Australasian debut.
The orchestra’s program will include works by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov.Founded in 1879 as the Shanghai Public Band under the direction of French flautist Jean Rémusat, the Shanghai Symphony orchestra has been a notable force in China’s classical music landscape. The ensemble gained international recognition for its contribution to the soundtrack of the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and has since performed at prestigious venues worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, the BBC Proms, and the Lucerne and Edinburgh festivals.
This upcoming tour follows a period of significant cultural reopening in China, with institutions like the Central Conservatory of Beijing resuming operations in 1978.
