Varapuzha ∙ A huge explosion took place at the firecracker warehouse in Muttinak at 5 pm yesterday in a way that shook the whole of Varapuzha. Even those living on the opposite side of the depot wharf, across the river on the Elur ferry side, came out of their houses thinking that there would be an earthquake. Commuters said the Varapuzha bridge and the approach road were shaken by the tremors. After the explosion, smoke balls rose into the sky.
Splattered concrete debris and parts of firecrackers were thrown up to a distance of 100 meters. Cracks fell in all the nearby walls. A part of the house that was completely destroyed in the blast fell on the sun shade of Biju’s house, a neighbor in Tundathi. With this, one corner of Biju’s house was completely destroyed. His wife and 3 daughters were drinking tea at home at that time. 4 of them were injured due to the building parts thrown in the blast.
Kooran Mathai and his son Anish, who are right next to this house, were sitting inside the house when bricks and other debris fell on them. The house of Anson’s son Jensen, who is the licensee of the firecracker warehouse, is also adjacent to the warehouse. Jensen’s face and body were injured in the blast. Part of the house collapsed. Anson’s younger brother Davis also worked here, police said.
Locals join hands for rescue operation
Varapuzha ∙ Although shaken by the sound of the explosion, the locals and the fire rescue team woke up and worked for the rescue operation. Smoke and the smell of gunpowder pervaded the area, raising concerns. All the natives came here. Many bravely came forward to save the injured.
In the meantime, the members of the fire rescue team, who came to know about the information, were also at the forefront of the rescue operations. Locals and people’s representatives were at the front to provide adequate light at night and provide necessary assistance to the fire force members.
5 houses destroyed in Elur
Elur – Houses were shaken in Elur Depot, Pallipuram Chal and Manalipallam areas of Periyarinikare in the firecracker factory in Varapuzha Muttinaka. 5 houses were damaged. Not knowing what had happened, people ran out of the house in fear. Some people also suspected that it was an earthquake. People on sofas and beds fell down due to the shock.
The window panes, ceilings and windows of the houses were shaken. No one was hurt. The houses of Antony Jeemon, Vadaikkal Varghese, Akathe Palliparamba Mumtaz and Manalipallam Seema Biju were destroyed in Elur Depot Chillikoota. The window panes of the timber depot building were shattered. The front of the van parked on the roadside was completely destroyed.
The fire was brought under control by the fire brigade from Paravur and Elur units. There were two small explosions while spraying water, but no one was injured. Firecrackers with more impact were stored in another corner of the building where the explosion took place, but the fire did not spread to this, averting a major disaster. Collector Renu Raj and top police officers reached the spot.
Dharmajan survived miraculously
Kochi – Actor Dharmajan Bolgatti escaped from the explosion site of a firecracker factory in Varapuzha Muttinaka within minutes. Dharmajan reached the place in search of the brother of the firecracker factory operator. The explosion happened within a few minutes after talking from there.
