Sexual Harassment in China’s Internal E-Commerce Alibaba

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Raksasa E-Commerce asal China, Alibaba, is being investigated by the local police for allegations of sexual harassment by its employees.

The company’s official statement said Alibaba promised to cooperate with the police. Alibaba has also ruled out related parties suspected of violating the company’s rules and values.

“We have zero tolerance for sexual misconduct,” Alibaba wrote.

The allegation came from one of the female employees who did not want to be named in an internal post cited by Chinese media. AFP has not been able to verify this.

He accused the manager and client of sexually assaulting him while on a work trip to Jinan city in Shandong province, according to media reports. It also went viral on Chinese social media.

The issue of sexual harassment in China is on the rise. Moreover, there is the #MeToo feminist movement since 2018.

One of the biggest cases in Beijing involved Chinese-Canadian pop star Kris Wu. He has been detained on suspicion of rape.

Wu was accused by one of the 19 -year -old students, of having raped her when she was 17 years old. This accusation reaped criticism against the singer on social media. That resulted in some luxury brands canceling deals with Wu.

State media on Sunday (8/8/2021), citing an internal memo posted by Alibaba CEO Daniel Zhang, said he was shocked, angry and embarrassed about the breach.
