“Sexism” in the Assembly: Richard Ferrand “strongly condemns” the remarks made

The President of the National Assembly, Richard Ferrand (LREM), “Strongly condemned” on Thursday the remarks made against LFI MP Mathilde Panot, treated by « poissonnière » by an elected LREM in the hemicycle two days earlier.

“Sexism has no place in our society, even less in the expression of an elected representative of the Republic, even within the hemicycle”, underlined the presidency of the Assembly in a press release.

“Decided not to let anything go”, Richard Ferrand “Will discuss this subject at the next conference of presidents” next Tuesday, he said.

Mathilde Panot had demanded “Apologies” and “sanctions” after this “sexist insult”, attributed to LREM deputy for Vendée Pierre Henriet and audible in the video of the debates on Tuesday evening.

Pierre Henriet apologized on Twitter, however refuting any sexist intention in his remarks.

“Mathilde Panot spends her time vociferating in the podium and interrupting the floor. I was exasperated and my words are in no way an insult even less sexist, it is an expression to denounce his behavior as I do also for his male colleagues ”, he argued.

“If she feels wrongly insulted, I beg her to excuse me. By the way, I thank his rebellious comrades for the hundreds of insults with which they cover me – on which side then is the contempt? “, he added.

“Too much sexism in the Assembly”

Mathilde Panot adds that another insult was thrown at her, “The madman”, by a “LREM deputy” and ask for a “Identification without delay of the author” of these words, also audible in the video of the debates.

“It’s not a personal matter. It is our institution that must not let this go. There is too much sexism in the National Assembly ”, the LFI MP told AFP.

“I recall that there had been bleating during a speech by the deputy Alice Thourot (LREM) or that my colleagues Clémentine Autain (LFI) and Elsa Faucillon (PCF) had been treated as little assholes by the deputy Meyer Habib (UDI) “, underlined the elected representative of Val-de-Marne.

The incident was mentioned Thursday morning in the hemicycle by several parliamentarians including the chairman of the session Marc Le Fur. Bouncing back on the words of a deputy evoking certain trades such as fishmongers, the elected representative of Côtes-d’Armor asserted : “We have talked a lot about fishmongers lately, it is a very respectable profession.”
