Several people were killed in a church explosion in DR Congo

An explosion at a church in Kasindi, North Kiwi province, during a baptism ceremony.

A Kenyan citizen has been arrested in connection with the explosion.

The government believes that the bombing was carried out by the United Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group that calls itself the Central African branch of the Islamic State terrorist organization.

“The government condemns in the strongest possible terms the bombing, which was most definitely carried out by ADF terrorists,” government spokesman Patrick Mujaya confirmed in a statement.

The ADF has been responsible for killing thousands of civilians in North Kiwi and Ituri provinces over the past decade, according to UN estimates.

There are 130 armed groups active in eastern DR Congo, many of them aiming to control valuable natural resources, according to the US government.

The country is rich in natural resources such as copper, cobalt, gold and diamonds.
