Taxi Boss Bishop Zola Yelelo Killed in Mthatha Shootout

A deadly confrontation involving the National Intervention Unit resulted in the death of prominent Eastern Cape taxi boss, Bishop Zola Yelelo. The incident, near Mthatha Airport, has raised serious concerns. Details surrounding the event remain scarce.

Fatal Encounter

Reports indicate that the shootout may have claimed the lives of six individuals. Yelelo had been under police scrutiny for several months prior to this incident. The circumstances leading up to the gunfire are still under investigation.

Yelelo previously faced charges. In April, he appeared in the Ezibeleni Magistrates Court on accusations of extortion and intimidation. He was released on bail following his appearance.

Taxi violence in South Africa has been a long-standing issue. The taxi industry has seen about 300 murders in the past five years, according to a 2024 study (Crime Statistics 2024).

Prior Incidents

Last November, the former SANTACO chairman in the province was apprehended by the South African Police Service. The arrest occurred at a Mall of Africa restaurant in Johannesburg, where Yelelo was with associates.

The group was being sought for their alleged involvement in multiple taxi-related murder cases. The investigation into this fatal shooting is ongoing.
