Lucknow: Preparations for the execution of a woman for the first time in India since independence have begun in Uttar Pradesh. Preparations are underway for the execution of Shabnam, the convict in the Amroha massacre case that rocked the country in April 2008. However, it is reported that the date of hanging of the accused has not been decided yet.
In April 2008, Shabnam and her boyfriend Salim brutally hacked seven members of Shabnam’s family to death with an ax. The gruesome massacre was thought to have hampered the family’s relationship with Saleem. Police arrested Shabnam and Salim in connection with the case. Two years later, in July 2010, the district court sentenced both men to death. He approached the Supreme Court against this but the Supreme Court upheld the sentence. The mercy petition to the President was also rejected. With this, the proceedings to execute the sentence of the accused began.
Shabnam is currently lodged in Bareilly Jail and Saleem Agra Jail. However, it is reported that Shabnam will be executed in a jail in Mathura. The Mathura jail is the only center in the state where women are hanged. Built 150 years ago, not a single person has been hanged here since independence. Prison officials say Shabna may be the first woman to be hanged in India since 1947.
Shabnam will be hanged by Pawan Jallad, who hanged the accused in the Nirbhaya case. Prior to the execution, Pawan visited the Mathura jail twice and inspected it. Under his direction, some parts of the gallows were repaired. The rope from Buxar has also been sent to the jail in Mathura.
Mathura jail senior superintendent Shailendra Kumar said Shabnam’s sentence would be carried out after a death warrant was issued. He added that preparations for this have already started in the jail.
